From on-campus labs to community learning opportunities, the early childhood education program gives students a chance to practice and analyze their emerging skills. Students take their skills to real early childhood education settings, earning real world experiences with children, community members, and current educators. This program includes various service learning experiences, providing students with a sense of community. Despite the long-term benefits of early childhood education and widespread public support for ECE programs, many children lack access to integrated, inclusive early learning experiences before kindergarten.

Why Is Early Childhood Education Important?

Access to effective, diverse programs breaks down structural barriers that have prevented all children–particularly children of color and children from disadvantaged families–from achieving their full potential. Universal pre-K and Kindergarten give children the foundation they need for a lifetime of learning and success. While overall career growth for ECE employees is high, recent graduates of an ECE program should ideally look for work in population centers where the total population growth is higher or in states that have more robust funding for ECE programs. This includes states such as Texas, North Carolina, California, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland. Access to early childhood education has been slow and inequitable, both across and within countries. Worldwide, vulnerable children are disproportionately excluded from quality pre-primary education – even though it can have the greatest impact on them.

Waiting until children enter preschool or kindergarten to introduce these vital interventions is simply too late. And care programs for young children have become increasingly available in countries around the globe. There is consensus across a variety of fields that early childhood is a sensitive period of life, marked by development of critical cognitive, social–emotional, and physical skills. Over the past few decades, a large body of research has shown that participation in early childhood education programs can produce positive impacts on children’s development. Improvements in early learning and development in turn produce long-term improvements in achievement, educational attainment, and social behavior. Specific impacts shown in longer-term studies of high-quality preschool programs include decreased rates of grade retention and special education enrolment, increased school completion rates, and reductions in crime and delinquency rates.

Curricula in early childhood care and education is the driving force behind any ECCE programme. It is ‘an integral part of the engine that, together with the energy and motivation of staff, provides the momentum that makes programmes live’. It follows therefore that the quality of a programme is greatly influenced by the quality of its curriculum. In early childhood, these may be programs for children or parents, including health and nutrition interventions and prenatal programs, as well as center-based programs for children. Vygotsky argued that since cognition occurs within a social context, our social experiences shape our ways of thinking about and interpreting the world. People such as parents, grandparents, and teachers play the roles of what Vygotsky described as knowledgeable and competent adults.
